Loft Conversion Process

In any loft conversion project, the first step is to arrange for a site meeting so we can ascertain the scope of the build. Here you can discuss your loft requirements in detail, or any additional custom features that you may want to include to determine the best outcome for your property, needs and budget. From there, a detailed plan of action will be put in place before the loft building work commences.

During the building stage, your chosen loft conversion will be installed to your desired specifications in line with health and safety regulations. The process will involve extending into your loft and designing the space according to the design and layout as discussed at the site meeting.

The length of time from start until completion will depend on the scope of the loft conversion project. However, an estimated timeframe will be given before work starts. Once the building work is completed, the work will be signed off and you can then enjoy your new loft space!

Loft Conversion Quality Control & Checks

Once building of your loft conversion commences, a quality control system is implemented, with an insurance-backed guarantee delivered upon completion.

Types of Loft Conversions

Dormer Loft Conversions

While extensions are a common addition to homes including within loft spaces, what most people don’t realise is that there are many different types of loft conversions available. One of the most modern and popular types being a dormer loft conversion. A dormer loft conversion is a structural extension that sits on the roof of your home. There are two main types of dormer loft conversions known as; the pitched roof dormer and the flat roof dormer. Dormer loft conversions offer a practical and contemporary way to maximise the space of property by building into the existing roof space. Adding both extra space and value onto your home, this popular form of renovation can transform your living space with minimal hassle compared with other extension types.

A pitched roof dormer loft conversions can be designed to fit all house styles but is typically used on bungalows or houses that have a hipped roof. As hipped roofs have a sharp slant, this reduces the amount of space available in the loft. Pitched roof loft conversions work with your existing space to create more headroom. The roof of the conversion is angled which provides additional ceiling height compared with a flat roof. Though, the biggest benefit is the amount of light pitched roof dormers let into the room. This is especially the case in bungalows that may lack any natural light in the roof space. Once completed, roof tiles are added to give an aesthetically pleasing result.

Flat Roof Dormer Loft Conversions

Flat roof dormer loft conversions add a boxed shaped extension onto the top of your home. As the name suggests, the roof sits flat as opposed to being sloped. The design of a flat roof dormer loft conversion can be perfectly tailored to fit your desired layout and needs. Most commonly, flat roof loft dormers feature large windows on the exterior wall to allow natural light to flood the roof space. The exterior walls can also be finished in a range of cladding and rendering styles.

No two homes are the same, so why should your loft conversion be? As well as choosing the type of loft conversion that would work best for your property, it’s also possible to create several outcomes within the layout and finish of the project too.

Depending on the size of your loft conversion it could be possible to create several rooms such as bedrooms and bathrooms. Or you could keep it open plan to create a large fitness studio or home office. By combining our expertise with your vision, we can work with you to create your dream loft conversion.

For the finishing touches, we can install bespoke windows, balconies and a range of other custom features. All of which will be in keeping with the rest of your property to ensure a sleek, high-spec finish throughout.

Loft Conversion FAQs

What types of housing are dormer loft conversions suitable for?

Most types of housing including detached, semi-detached, terraced and end of terraces are suitable for dormer loft conversions. In some cases, this can include flats too.

What makes a house unsuitable for a dormer loft conversion is mostly low ceiling heights. A distance of 2.2 meters is required between the floor joists to the highest point, to ensure an adequate ceiling height. However, if the distance is shorter than this it’s sometimes possible to come up with an alternate solution.

Will I need planning permission for a loft conversion?

While most loft conversions don’t require planning permission, it can sometimes be necessary depending on the scope of the build or if you live in a conversation area. Luckily, here at Atomic Build, we handle all aspects of the project for you including planning approval. Though this may not be the case if your dormer loft conversion is being handled by another company. So be sure to ask plenty of questions with the firm who you choose for the job.

How much does a dormer loft conversion cost?

No two loft conversions are the same, so unless we know what we are dealing with we can’t be specific. However, we are more than happy to come and give you a free quote to determine the cost for your loft extension.

Factors that influence the cost include the type of conversion, the scope of the project (i.e, some clients simply extend the room whereas others add bedrooms, ensuites etc) and the spec of the finish.

I live in a conservation area. Can I still have a loft conversion?

London has a total of 27 conservation areas. If you live in a conservation area, the type of work you are allowed to carry out on your home is subject to strict criteria to preserve the character of the building. It is sometimes possible to work around conversation properties with the right approach. We would be happy to look at this in further detail for you.
